- Dimensions of the planting area (container length and width)
- Width of plants in the finished design (the plant spacing)
- If your plants are in 4-inch pots, the “plant spacing” number should be 4. It is NOT the spacing between the plants.
The calculator will tell you the estimated number of plants you need to plant a rectangular pattern or a triangle pattern.

For instance, a nicely grown petunia in a 4″ pot can be more like something in a 6″ or 8″ pot
